Bats and Bathrooms

If you’d asked us 32 weeks ago, at the time of our first bat emergence survey, you’d have heard us bemoaning the fact that the second bat survey would cause a delay to our building work (bats hibernate from the end of September to the start of May and so the surveys need to be done outside of these months). Little did we know that we wouldn’t even have got through the first stage of planning by then, and so another 8 weeks of bat surveys and getting our bat licence would do absolutely nothing to our timescales 🙁

It was great though to see the team of expert ecologists back again – dedicated enough to sit outside in the freezing cold and watch out for the bats emerging. And one more thing ticked off in our journey. They’ll be back again in a fortnight for the final survey, and to collect the bat monitors they left this time round, after which we’ll submit our application for a bat licence that’ll allow us to move bats from the derelict barns into their new boxes we installed back in February.

And we’ve managed to tick off another room too! The ensuite is pretty much finished, bar the radiators and door hinges – they’ll be done later. We continued the driftwood theme – luckily having some greyer bits that went with the paint. It feels like a much fresher room now, than when it was just plain white.

The rain on Saturday made it feel like we weren’t wasting a day, inside painting again (standard weekend now!). Somehow we’ve completely finished the walls, the beam and ceiling in the bedroom already, and only have one more coat of woodwork to go – plus the various electrical item replacements. Next weekend is going to be busy trying to get it all finished!
