Beaches

Lyme Regis (13 miles)
Lyme Regis is on the Jurassic Coast and is well known for its fossils. Persuasion (by Jane Austen) was set on the Cobb which forms the harbour wall and is covered in fossils. It’s great to walk on in good weather.
Lyme Regis has both stony beaches (dog friendly all year round) and a sandy beach. This allows dogs from October 1 to April 30.

More information about Lyme Regis can be found here.

Charmouth (13 miles)
Charmouth is the most Easterly beach within 30 minutes and is famous for its fossils. It has three different beaches, all with different dog restrictions. It’s usually well signposted.
You can walk along the beach from Charmouth to Lyme Regis; there is a route back along the headland on the South West Coastal Path.

Charmouth Beach’s website is here.

Seaton (14 miles)
Seaton has a pebble beach and is dog friendly all year round. Other attractions at Seaton include the Seaton Tramway (also dog friendly downstairs) and Seaton Wetlands. You can walk from Seaton to Beer along the coast path.

You can find more information on their website here.

Branscombe (15 miles)
Branscombe has a shingle beach that is dog friendly all year round (save for a small part). It’s surrounded by countryside with various walks, including a lovely round walk to Beer which winds along the cliffs one way and then comes back along the headland. In the village are some very pretty, old buildings and an old (and still working) forge to explore.

The National Trust website has useful information here.

Beer (16 miles)
You can either go to Beer directly or walk from Branscombe or Seaton. Beer Beach is a pebble beach – the eastern end is dog friendly all year round while the west end only allows dogs from October 1 to April 30. You can walk up the cliffs to get a lovely view across Beer beach.

Beer’s website is here if you want more details.

Sidmouth (19 miles)
Sidmouth is a beautiful town with lots going on and events throughout the year. There are a few shingle beaches but only one is dog friendly all year round.

You can find information about Sidmouth here.

Budleigh Salterton (26 miles)
Budleigh Salterton is the furthest coastal town featured from Ley Farm Cottages. It’s a 2.5mile pebble beach with amazing red cliffs dating back to the Triassic period – you can park at one end of the town and walk along the beach into town. Dogs are welcome at the East and West beach all year round, but the central beach is only accessible from 1 October to 30 April.

To find out more, you can visit their website.

Sandy Bay, Exmouth (27 miles)
Located on the coast between Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth, Sandy Bay is a great stretch of sheltered beach. Parking is difficult in summer as it’s located beneath a caravan park which you need to park outside and walk through, but there are some great views along the Jurassic coast.

The South West Coast Path runs along the top of the cliffs so you can take a diversion down to the beach. Please note dogs are not allowed on the beach between 1 April and 31 October.
