Another slow week of progress for us. Our big win this week is managing to plant out our potatoes – which is actually much harder than it sounds! A few years ago we turned the overgrown bramble edge of our orchard into vegetable beds, including a dedicated space for potatoes with a front wall that is removable and makes it easier to dig down to the bottom of the bed. So ‘planting out’ potatoes means digging the entire potato bed out, planting the potatoes and then covering the tops just enough for them to start sprouting.

And we actually started painting the ceilings in the Cow Shed – albeit only in the bedroom and the little cupboard as we still need to finish sanding and cleaning in the main living area. According to our original decorating schedule we were supposed to finish the first coat of the ceilings this weekend and start the second coat – but we didn’t anticipate having as many other plans. Every extra week it takes is another week we’re not open and earning money so we do need to get a move on. Perhaps if we finish the sanding and cleaning it’ll make the job feel a little smaller and inspire us a bit more.
The brick trough at the entrance gate is looking lovely now with all the daffodils out and the lupins gradually growing back from last year. It’s amazing to look back at the photos last year – it’s been a year to the day that we planted it up, and It’s great to see some of the plants coming back to life. It makes such a difference driving in and seeing bright flowers instead of an overgrown heap of ivy and brambles.

I’m counting down the days to the clocks going forwards and the evenings getting light enough to go for a walk. The lambs have started appearing in the fields and we’ve even had a couple of dry days to enjoy!
