Yarcombe Terrier Races 2025

Everything else has been on pause this week as all our efforts have gone into the organisational finishing touches and then the setup, running and takedown of the annual Yarcombe Terrier Races. The event has become a staple in the local village calendar to fundraise for the upkeep of the Yarcombe church and to support the community – it’s now been running for 51 years with just two years off during Covid. About 20% of the local community helps in some way – be that giving up their time to volunteer during the event week, or donating prizes. The races (not just for terriers!) are the main event – we’ve recently added a successful dog show and dog agility course. And for humans we have games like skittles and china smash, tombolas and a newly-added dog trail to keep children entertained.

It takes a lot to organise but is entirely worth it to see so many people and dogs enjoying themselves, and it’s a lovely way to meet new people in the village through the volunteering side. Plus it’s a bit of a challenge to see how much money we can raise, and better it each year. We do heave a sigh of relief the afternoon after though, once the field is empty and everything is packed away again for another year. Although after this year we’ve promised ourselves not to leave it too late to start the organisation so it’s not as last-minute and rushed, and can spread the work out a bit more. We’ve missed all sorts of jobs in the garden because we’ve been focusing on the races, including losing fruit we never had time to pick and freeze. Something to work on next year!
