Bathrooms and Building Control

Two months ago we started looking at kitchens and bathrooms, visiting two companies that specialised in both areas. Amazingly, even though we’re putting in three kitchens and six bathrooms, one company just hasn’t responded for either. The second company that we went to see a few weeks after has only come back with one [very basic] kitchen design, which is a start but doesn’t really help us at all.

So this week we decided to give up on them both, and start looking ourselves. We only had Sunday free and so were limited in where we could look (most showrooms seem to be closed on Sundays), but we still managed to go to a few shops in Exeter and get a good idea. It turned out to be far better anyway as one of the bathroom showrooms and the tile factory outlet had a huge selection of products and display rooms to give us inspiration. It was good fun looking at each different item to see what we liked and didn’t like – although it reinforced just how many options there are, and how much we need to choose. First though we need to decide what style we want each building in, and design the bathrooms accordingly. Google is proving pretty useful when it comes to finding photos for ideas!

We also took the next step with our overall build, which is due to start around October time. We’d been advised to find our own Building Control company rather than use the council (who have much longer lead times) and so this week appointed London Building Control to oversee everything. It all felt very real when we received confirmation that they’ve notified the District Council – this means we can legally start building. The council are overdue with their response to two of our outstanding planning applications so we’re hoping to hear back this week as well – fingers crossed they’re accepted and it’s another tick in the box!
