Exploring our local area: Axe Valley Wildlife Park

A recent visit from our nieces (5 and 7 years old) gave us an excuse to visit the Axe Valley Wildlife Park – only 20 minutes’ drive away. Not really knowing what to expect, we were amazed by the variety of animals there – from various birds like ostriches, flamingos, and love birds; to mammals like zebras, alpacas, lynxes, and meerkats; and then a huge range of smaller animals and insects including tarantulas, chipmunks and marmosets.

The girls (and adults!!) loved the animal enclosures that held ‘Animal Encounters’ at set times throughout the day, where they could learn more about the animals, ask questions and even touch them if they were brave enough. The girls were ecstatic about touching a bearded dragon, and didn’t stop talking about it for the rest of the day!

The park also has several separate play areas for children; our nieces convinced us that each one had something slightly different that warranted stopping in for at least 15 minutes – although I suspect this may have been them trying their luck! At least that gave us a chance to sneak in a lush ice-cream while they were busy on the climbing frames…

The Axe Valley Wildlife Park is a good day out for families, at fairly reasonable prices, and with the option to take a picnic to reduce costs. With fabulous ratings on both Facebook and Tripadvisor (at the time of writing!) we’ll definitely be including it in our ‘Suggested days out’ section in our cottage folders for our future visitors.
