An anti-climax of a week…

This week started off with so much promise. We’ve been pinning a ridiculous number of photos to our Pinterest board, well into the early hours (anyone else get mildly obsessed with Pinterest??), and were expecting to start talking building designs this week.

We also had our bat emergence survey on Tuesday (which was itself actually incredibly exciting) with 9 local – and some national(!!) – experts sitting around our buildings, complete with ipads, sensors and notepads, documenting the activity of our bats from early sunset through to about 9pm. They were incredibly knowledgeable, and even showed us where our rarer bats ‘warmed up’ in the shed before venturing out to get food.

What we hadn’t expected was that the ecologists would leave sensors to monitor the bats’ activity, and that we’d need to wait a further five (at least) days for these to be picked up – meaning we also have to wait for feedback on our resident bats. As some of our bats will require large roosts (bigger than our old bathroom in London!!), there’s no point in starting any designs before we know what we need to do to accommodate them, and how much space we’ll actually have to convert.

Our mild disappointment was followed by three days of rain, meaning no opportunity to progress with the endless list of garden jobs. At least it’s given us the chance to chop up the pile of kindling in the back; and the excuse for extra Pinterest searching! And of course – plan some exciting treats for the puppy’s second birthday on Friday – our first birthday in the new home is surely an excuse to spoil her!

As we settle in for a further week of rain and wind, we’ve now started to look at indoor jobs we can do – at least there’s plenty to keep us busy here :)
