A day out to Lyme Regis

Sitting outside today in a thick jumper, it’s hard to believe that only last weekend we were at the beach in glorious warm sunshine. We’re only just over half an hour from Lyme Regis, easily close enough for a day out. And such a lovely day out too!

Lyme Regis has more than we expected – with pebble beaches for the dogs, a sea wall to walk along (the site of a very famous scene in Jane Austen’s Persuasion, we were reliably informed!!), sandy beaches (no dogs allowed in the summer months), and a long stretch of promenade with beautiful pastel-coloured beach huts. The tidal harbour is full of boats bobbing around – at least when the tide is in, and looks so picturesque. And at the other end of the promenade by the Marine Theatre, you get views of the Jurassic Coast stretching out in front of you.

The town sits just above the beach, with narrow windy streets and rock/fossil/antique shops – as well as the usual beach ones. And there’s a number of places to visit – the aquarium out on the sea front, the dinosaur museum, and a fossil museum that tells the story of Mary Anning – a famous female geologist who discovered dinosaur skeletons in the Victorian times. Unfortunately these weren’t dog friendly, so we’ll have to come back another time to properly explore them!

Lyme Regis will definitely have a place in our visitor book when we get up and running – it’s a fabulous day out, and even nicer to escape back to the peace and quiet of the country afterwards.
